Vicat Softening Temperature

Thermoplastic materials are softened and melted at certain temperature when heat is applied to such materials. There is a specific method to determine softening temperature of different thermoplastic materials.

The temperature at which a flattened (i.e. perpendicular to axis) needle of 1 mm² circular cross section gets penetrated into a thermoplastic specimen of plain-flat surface to a depth of 1mm under a specific load using a selected uniform rate of temperature.

Test Procedure:

Set the required temperture recommended for the material to be tested.

Switch on Stirrer.

Load the TEST Sample.

Insert the Indeent Rod. Make sure indent point is resting over the test sample.

Insert the slotted dead weight on the collared cap. Total load of dead weight is applied on test sample.

Set the Dial Gauge at '0' (zero) to measure movement of Indent Rod downward.

As the temperaturein bath increases gradully and a constant pressure on indenter is applied, the indenter pin will start penetrating test sample. This movement of penetration of indent pin can be read on the dial gauge with accurancy of 0.01 mm.

Simultaneously the temperature of the test sample is read on temperature controller on the panel with accuracy of 0.1 C.

When Indent pin penetrates 1 mm deep in test sample, note the temperature reading. This temperature is called VICAT Softening Temperature of the material.

At least three readings with same material are to be taken and the average is calculated.
